If Kate died, David become closed off and doesn't talk to Javier and Gabe. Gabriel holds respect and reverence for his father. He expresses a wish early on to become "a man like [him]", implying that he considers David a good role model.

When Lingard hears of David's removal from Richmond, he is deeply saddened and sympathetic of his situation, even going so far as to ask Javi and Clem to kill him to spare him from living in a place without a source of optimism and order people like David used to bring to it.
